A 2-day jungle trek in Bukit Lawang is our most popular option as it allows you to explore the deeper parts of Gunung Leuser National Park, immersing yourself in nature as you spend a night in the campsite by the river. You have more chances to encounter wildlife like orangutans, gibbons, macaques, and various bird species. This trek typically combines a combination of hiking through dense jungle, river crossings, and camping overnight in the wild.

Here’s a guide to a typical 2-day trek in Bukit Lawang:

Day 1: Bukit Lawang to Jungle Camp

    • Departure from Bukit Lawang: You’ll begin your trek early in the morning from Bukit Lawang village. Your guide will meet you at your accommodation where you’ll set off.

    • Hiking Starts: The trek begins with an ascent into the jungle, entering Gunung Leuser National Park. Along the way, your guide will introduce you to the plants, trees, and animals that make the forest so unique. Expect some steep inclines and uneven terrain, especially in the morning.

    • Wildlife Spotting: Keep your eyes peeled for wildlife, particularly orangutans. These majestic creatures are often seen hanging in trees or searching for food. There’s also a good chance of spotting languars, pig-tailed macaques, and various bird species.

    • Rest Stop and Snack: After a couple of hours of hiking, you'll stop for a break and enjoy some snacks and water. Depending on the route, the guide may set up a mini-break in a scenic spot by the river or near a natural water source.

    • Lunch: The guide typically prepares a simple but delicious lunch, often made from local ingredients like rice, vegetables, and sometimes chicken or fish. (do let us know of dietary requirements beforehand)

    • Continued Trek: After lunch, you’ll resume hiking deeper into the jungle. The terrain can vary, with some parts being muddy and slippery, so be prepared for a more strenuous walk in the afternoon.

    • Arrive at Jungle Camp: Late afternoon, you'll arrive at the jungle camp. The guides will set up tents and a cooking fire. You’ll have time to relax, enjoy the peaceful surroundings, and watch the sunset. Your camp will be far from the village, giving you a true sense of wilderness.

    • Dinner in the Jungle: As night falls, enjoy a simple, hearty meal cooked at the camp. The food usually consists of rice, vegetables, eggs, and sometimes chicken or fish.

    • Night in the Jungle: Sleep under the stars in your tent. The sounds of the jungle—such as distant gibbons, insects, and flowing water—will create a unique ambiance as you fall asleep.

Day 2: Jungle Camp to Bukit Lawang

    • Breakfast: The jungle is alive in the early morning. Wake up to the sounds of birds, insects, and the rustle of animals in the forest. You’ll enjoy a light breakfast with tea, coffee, and bread.

    • Mid Morning Activities: After breakfast you will get a chance to explore the area, maybe a swim in the river or visit a waterfall close by when you can relax and do some jungle face painting using natural clay and charcoal.

    • Lunch: You’ll head back to camp after the morning activities for some lunch prepared by your guide.

    • River Rafting: After lunch, enjoy the exhilarating river raft ride back to the village expertly navigated by your guides. The river offers a great mix of mild to moderate rapids which makes for an exciting adventure, where along the way you might spot wild animals along the banks.

    • Arrive Back in Bukit Lawang: You’ll likely arrive back in the village by late afternoon, where the trek will conclude. Your guide may offer some final thoughts on the experience, and you can relax or enjoy a well-deserved rest after your adventure.

Things to Expect on the Trek

  • Wildlife Encounters: There's a good chance of seeing orangutans, gibbons, macaques, and various bird species. The trek also offers a glimpse into the ecosystem of the rainforest, including its flora and fauna. The deeper you go, the more wildlife you may encounter.

  • Physical Challenge: The trek is moderately strenuous, especially on Day 1, with its steep climbs and uneven terrain. The heat and humidity can be intense, so staying hydrated is essential.

  • River Crossings: Depending on the route, you may need to cross rivers or streams. Your guide will help you navigate these sections safely.

  • Camping: The camping experience is basic but memorable. You'll sleep in tents and might have to share with fellow trekkers. The guides will ensure a safe and comfortable camping environment.
