A half-day trek is a great way to get a feel of the Jungle without going in too deep with the hopes of encountering wild orangutans, macaques, gibbons, and various bird species. All our treks will take you into Gunung Leuser National Park, where you may observe these animals in their natural habitat.
Here’s a guide to a typical half-day trek in Bukit Lawang:
Start at Bukit Lawang Village: Your trek typically begins at
the village, where your guide will meet you at your accommodation with the necessary equipment (e.g., rain poncho, water, snacks).Jungle Entry: The guide will then lead you through the lush jungle, pointing out interesting flora and fauna along the way. You'll trek through a combination of narrow paths, river crossings, and dense rainforest.
Wildlife Spotting: You may have the chance to see orangutans, which are often spotted hanging in the trees or feeding. Your guide will provide insight into the behavior and conservation efforts surrounding the species.
Rest Stops: There will likely be a few breaks during the trek
to enjoy the surroundings, drink water, have fruits/snacks
and rest.Return to Bukit Lawang: The trek will loop back toward the village, ending back either at the village or at your accommodation (depending on your next activity!)
What to bring
Wear Proper Footwear: Sturdy, non-slip shoes or hiking boots are important as the trails can be muddy and slippery.
Bring Insect Repellent: Mosquitoes can be common in the jungle, especially near rivers.
Respect Wildlife: Keep a safe distance from the animals. Orangutans, while habituated to humans in some areas, are still wild animals and should be treated with respect.
Bring Water and Snacks: The jungle can be hot and humid, so staying hydrated is important.
Rain Gear: Bukit Lawang can have sudden downpours, especially during the rainy season (November to April), so packing a light poncho or rain jacket is advisable.
